Against the Odds: My Journey from Mathematics to Legacy

People often ask me why I chose mathematics. The answer is much deeper than numbers, formulas, or equations. My journey into education, homeschooling, and entrepreneurship was born from a family story of perseverance, sacrifice, and an unwavering belief that education can change generations.

My name is Eric Goodson, and I am the founder of Math and More Homeschool Program. I am an educator, entrepreneur, real estate investor, husband, father, and lifelong advocate for helping families discover confidence in learning. But before any of those titles, I was a son inspired by the strength of an extraordinary woman — my mother.

The Legacy That Started It All

My mother's story became the foundation of my life's mission.

As a young girl, she was intentionally denied the opportunity to attend school by the very person entrusted with her care. Ironically, that individual was a schoolteacher. While other children sat in classrooms learning to read, write, and dream, my mother was deprived of the educational opportunities many take for granted.

Yet despite those disadvantages, she refused to allow her circumstances to define her future.

As a single mother raising two boys through the 1970s, 1980s, and into the 1990s, she demonstrated a level of resilience that still inspires me today. She taught me that determination can overcome obstacles, that character matters more than circumstances, and that success is possible even when the odds are stacked against you.

Watching her persevere planted a seed in my heart.

I knew that if she could accomplish so much without the educational opportunities she deserved, I would honor her sacrifices by making education my life's work.

Years later, earning my Master's Degree in Mathematics became more than an academic achievement. It became a tribute to my mother — a declaration that her struggles were not in vain and that her legacy would continue through future generations.

Discovering My Purpose

My educational journey began at Penn State University, where I earned my Bachelor's Degree. My passion for mathematics continued to grow, eventually leading me to George Washington University, where I earned my Master's Degree in Mathematics.

My first teaching position was at an all-girls school where I taught mathematics. Standing in front of those young women each day, I quickly learned that teaching was about far more than solving equations. It was about helping students discover confidence, overcome fear, and realize their potential.

As my career progressed, I served as a public school Assistant Principal and Behavior Intervention Specialist. These roles allowed me to work closely with students, families, and educators from diverse backgrounds.

I witnessed firsthand the challenges many students faced — not because they lacked ability, but because they lacked confidence. Mathematics, in particular, had become a source of anxiety for countless children. Too many students believed they simply "weren't math people."

I knew there had to be a better way.

The Birth of Math and More

In 2008, I founded Math and More. Initially, the program focused primarily on mathematics tutoring. While it helped students improve academically, something felt incomplete. Over time, I began to view it as simply another tutoring program in a crowded educational landscape.

Eventually, I stepped away from the vision I had originally created. What I didn't realize at the time was that Math and More wasn't ending — it was preparing for a rebirth.

A New Beginning Through Homeschooling

In 2018, my wife and I made a life-changing decision. We began homeschooling our children.

Like many parents entering the homeschooling world, we encountered questions, challenges, and moments of uncertainty. Yet we also discovered something remarkable: education could be personalized, empowering, and deeply connected to family values.

As our homeschooling journey continued, something unexpected happened. Friends, former Montessori families, and other parents began reaching out to us. They were interested in homeschooling but felt intimidated by the responsibility. Many doubted their ability to teach their own children, especially when it came to mathematics.

The same fears I had seen throughout my educational career were now appearing in parents:

  • "I don't know enough."
  • "What if I mess it up?"
  • "I'm not good at math."
  • "What if my child falls behind?"

I realized that parents didn't need someone to replace them as educators. They needed someone to equip them, encourage them, and help them discover their own confidence. That realization reignited the vision for Math and More.

More Than Mathematics

The rebirth of Math and More transformed it from a tutoring program into something much greater. Today, Math and More is a homeschool support program dedicated to helping families thrive. While mathematics remains a core focus, our mission extends far beyond numbers.

We work with students ages eight through eighteen, helping them overcome math anxiety and develop confidence through proven strategies and practical application. We help parents release their fears surrounding mathematics and embrace their role as capable educators.

Most importantly, we create an environment where learning becomes empowering rather than intimidating. The "More" in Math and More represents possibility. It represents confidence. It represents family. It represents legacy.

Empowering Educators Across Generations

As the program expanded, another opportunity emerged. I recognized that many talented educators, retirees, and professionals possessed valuable knowledge and experience that could benefit young learners. At the same time, many were searching for meaningful ways to supplement their income while continuing to make a difference.

Math and More became a bridge — between generations, between experienced educators and eager learners, between knowledge and opportunity. Today, the program serves not only students and parents but also teachers seeking professional development, retirees looking for purpose and supplemental income, and individuals interested in creating additional streams of revenue through education.

My Mission

My passion has never been simply teaching mathematics. My mission is helping people believe in themselves.

  • I want parents to know they are capable.
  • I want students to know they are intelligent.
  • I want educators to know their wisdom still matters.
  • I want families to know they can create educational experiences that are meaningful, effective, and life-changing.

The little girl who was denied an education could never have imagined that her son would one day earn a Master's Degree in Mathematics, become an educational leader, establish businesses, invest in real estate, and help countless families discover the joy of learning.

Everything I have built stands as a testament to her strength. Her story became my purpose. My purpose became Math and More.

And Math and More continues to transform lives — one student, one family, and one generation at a time. The journey is still unfolding, but the mission remains the same: to replace fear with confidence, anxiety with understanding, and limitations with possibility.

Because education is not simply about what we learn. It is about who we become.

Warmly,

Eric Goodson
